Chapter 10

Jonathan rose from his chair and put down his umpteenth cup of coffee as Nikki entered the hotel. She saw him immediately and rushed toward him. As if by instinct, he opened his arms and she filled them. They held one another tightly for a long moment.

“I’m sorry, Nikki, for the way I behaved last night.”

“I think I understand how bad it must have looked for you to have reacted that way. I was so afraid you’d leave without, at least, discussing it.”

“The psychologist in me wouldn’t allow it.”

She smiled when he said that. “I’m happy you’re here. I missed you so.”

“Really? How much?” he asked, looking into her eyes.

She drew his head down and kissed him, their lips clinging for a long kiss.

“This time I think I interpreted the scene correctly,” Jonathan said before kissing her again. They clutched one another tightly a little longer before Nikki remembered she had a cab waiting.

As he followed her out and into the backseat of the cab, she said, “We’ll drop your bag off at my apartment, and if you’re up to it, I’ll show you Paris.”

“Show me Paris,” he said, hugging her to him and nuzzling her slender neck.

When the cabbie dropped them off in front of the apartment building, Jonathan smiled. “Sort of reminds me of the brownstones back home. I bet it has a lot of history attached to it.”

“Funny you should say that. I intend to Google the address first chance to find out if anyone famous lived here. But, time’s a-wasting. Let’s take your bag upstairs and go for some breakfast.”

“I’m not certain I could eat anything. Despite taking half of the aspirin in the bottle, I still hear a jungle’s worth of drums playing in my head.”

“Trust me. When you walk into the place I’m taking you to, you’ll find an appetite.”

Once inside her apartment building, Nikki stopped in front of an ancient-looking elevator.

“Is this thing safe?”

“Would you rather climb the two double-flights?”

“I only have one life to lose,” he said and followed her inside.

Despite its ancient design and noisy creaking, the lift, as she called it, seemed to work well, and he relaxed.

“Wait until you see the apartment,” Nikki said, opening the front door.

Jonathan walked inside and put his suitcase down next to a velvet-covered chair in the sitting room. “You weren’t kidding. This is some place. Who lived here? I feel as if I just walked into a history book, half-expecting to see some French nobleman standing at the fireplace holding a drink. But why does it seem so chilly in here?”

Nikki gave him a weak smile. “Perhaps we can find out together, but first let’s see a little of Paris.”

Jonathan started to tour the rest of the apartment, but Nikki stopped him.

“You can see the rest of the place later. It’s best we get started before the day slips away.”Going back down in the lift, Nikki felt as if she’d just dodged a bullet. The fact Jonathan had sensed a drop in temperature put her on alert.
